The 8th European Basic Course in Neuropathology will be held from 24-27 September 2024, in Aachen, Germany
About the basic course
The basic course in neuropathology is meant for those who do not have the benefit of structured neuropathological training for and in their professional neuropathological activities. The course is intended for trainees in general pathology, neuropathology, neurology or neurosurgery but also for neurobiologists and PhD students in neurological sciences. Specifically, for those who, in the course of their PhD research, will be involved with the neuropathology of, for example, neurodegenerative diseases, developmental diseases, brain tumours or white matter diseases. The course is also intended for medical specialists from general pathology, neurology or neurosurgery, who would like to get more insight in the field of neuropathology.
History
The first basic course was held from 10-14 March 2008. The home base for the course is normally the Institut für Neuropathologie, Universitätsklinikum der RWTH in Aachen, Germany. Subsequent courses were held there in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. In April 2022 it was the first virtual-only version. Registrants could attend realtime, participate in the Q&A and various interactive sessions. They received 6 months acces to the recorded sessions, case materials and most powerpoint presentations of the abovementioned course. The next course (24-27 September 2024) is will be an in-person course.
Program
The program typically has 6 themes:
- General neuropathology
- Developmental neuropathology & epilepsy
- Infectious & inflammatory diseases of the nervous system
- Neurodegeneration & prion diseases
- Muscle pathology & metabolic diseases
- Neuro-oncology
In these sessions experts in the various fields give overviews of the latest insights. In various ways interaction with the audience will be sought: Q&A, case discussions, polls and live demo of digital microscopy. For the first time, the program will offer the chance to participate in small groups in one-hour brain cutting (2 sessions). Prior to the start of the course, the participants receive a link to case material which includes digital microscopy.
